{would you like a side salad with that?}

**

You may recall that back in May this year I posted about losing my blogging mojo, that I felt that this blog had somehow become almost exclusively about sewing, and omitted inclusion of posts on other subjects that I enjoyed.

So with this in mind I found it quite interesting this afternoon to read that Tilly has done 'a little blog roll house keeping' and struck off any that were not exclusively about sewing.  One particular reader Jane got quite upset by Tilly's post, to the point that it would seem she has decided to no longer follow Tilly's blog.

Whilst I do not feel quite so strongly about the matter as Jane (I mean heck, not like Tilly was ever following my blog) I agree that it was a little bit, well unnecessary I guess, to publicly announce the cull. Is it not potentially alienating to those people who do read your blog, and, who do post on more varied subject fields than just sewing on their own blogs, to essentially say that you have no interest in what they have to say unless it is about sewing?

Now do not misunderstand me, this is not a public slamming of Tilly,  I may not agree with her sentiments personally when it comes to what appeals to me when I read blogs, but I am confident there was no intentional malice in what she was saying. And of course I can overlook a difference in opinion, and brush off her comments which may not have been thought through fully from other peoples point of view, to still find value in some of her other posts.

The reason I am bringing it up is because it got me curious, firstly, are you are as 'focused' as Tilly is when you go through your blog reader, or do you like a side salad with your main course? And secondly, who do you write your blog for? Is it for yourself, or do your readers influence what you post about, and if so to what extent?

When I am reading other blogs, I really like to get to know the person behind the blog, as well as admire their latest pretty frock, bop along to their music suggestions, or swoon over their latest trend compilation. For me, I am more likely to continue reading a blog by someone I feel a personal connection with. I would rather see a snapshot of someones road trip through the Nevada dessert, or engagement announcement, than yet another sew along post for a garment I am not making.

For me on my blog here, I like to diversify on topics, there is more to me than just the gal that sits behind a sewing machine, so why wouldn't I share with you what else floats my boat? Whilst I certainly do not put all aspects of my life on the blog,  I do like to highlight that there is other things I enjoy doing, mostly it is other creative outlets, photography, refurbishing furniture and the like.

Sure you guys don't really comment as much on them, so they obviously do not engage you as much as my sewing seems to, but as I look back on my archives, I get satisfaction from reading back through and seeing how I have developed and changed year on year. Last time I checked you guys weren't paying me, and I don't have any sponsors to appease, so really why not cover topics as the fancy takes me?

Of course I write my blog for your guys too, and love some of the connections this blog has enabled me to make throughout the world, because if it were just about keeping a record for myself then I could mark my blog as private and treat it as a diary couldn't I? But, I do this primarily as a hobby (for want of a better word), so if I am going to sacrifice part of my ever increasingly small amount of leisure time, then I want to enjoy compiling the posts as well.

I would love to hear your thoughts on it, do you only care about the core subject of the blogs you read (whether that subject be sewing, fashion, gardening or cooking etc), or do you like a little variety? Do you want to know about the gardeners trip to Antarctica, or could you not care less?

Oh - and if you do have a moment, and are inclined to read sewing blogs, a quick peruse through the comments is suggested, there are some great new to me blogs, and I am pleased to see that Lazy Stitching has got a mention in there too!
