{Pay it forward - a giveaway)

Remember ages ago I told you that I would have to have a giveaway to celebrate the relaunch of the business? I promise I had not forgotten about the giveaway, but wanted to make sure that when I did it, it was not just about self promotion.

A couple of nights ago I jumped on Twitter for the first time in a week, and almost instantly got involved in a conversation with the delightful A Little Ink; catching up on the weeks events and what we had both been knee deep in, when the topic of charities came up and I had a light-bulb moment.

I thought it would be ace* to have a giveaway which incorporated supporting small business and/or charity. The two may seem like a weird combination, but if you are in small business, you will understand just how closely the two are related, both are always hoping for more money!

So, I have a NZD$50 (fifty dollar) voucher up for grabs, you have 2 weeks from today to enter (which makes it Friday 25 November here in New Zealand). To enter you have a gazillion options, the first three are pretty standard shameless self promotion options:
  • Like UtBwB on Facebook
  • Tweet about how much you like UtBwB on Twitter (must use @utbwb, must follow me, must link to this post)
  • Link to this giveaway on your own blog (preferably saying nice things, not mean things)
Comment below and let me know which of these you have done, and you get one entry, if you do all three, three entries, pretty simple non?

Now, here is how you get some bonus entries...Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a communities support for small business and charity to grow. I want you to think of a small business in its early stages, or a charity, that you would like to help, and support it. I do not care how 'big' or 'small' the gesture of support, I just encourage you to give as much as you can, in whatever way you can, for example:
  • Volunteer some time each week to the SPCA
  • Donate a can of food to the City Mission
  • Give blood or sign up for organ donation
  • Buy a pattern from an independent such as Sewaholic or Collette instead of the 'big four'
  • Shop exclusively this Christmas from small businesses, perhaps a necklace for your sister, a onesie for your new niece/nephew, a tea towel for your Dad, or pencils for your Secret Santa
  • Join stringsof.me, a new website which journals a different question each day, that you answer year upon year, better yet get all your friends to join too
  • Put together a blog post on your current 'lusting after' list of wares from your favourite independent artists, you could use it as a not so subtle hint to friends and family about what you would like for Christmas

As a guide this week I:
  • Sponsored a 3 year old $10 to complete 20 laps in her kindergartens tricathon
  • Instigated a collection at work to support the Christchurch City Mission's annual food-bank appeal
  • Recommended my darling (darling) hairdresser to three work colleagues
  • Bought supplies for my business from two New Zealand small businesses
You can see, that two of these things cost me nothing more than time!

Tell me how you support a small independent business or charity during the next two weeks, and who they are, (again, just leave me a comment below) and I will add your name to the hat another five times. Donate blood on your way home from a volunteer shift at the local soup kitchen - that's ten entries. Buy a pencil to write in the card to send with your tea towel to Dad and that's fifteen entries! Pretty ace non?

The winner will be drawn at random on Saturday 26 November, you have 6 months to redeem the voucher in either my Felt or Etsy shop. Please make sure I have some way of contacting you (i.e twitter, blog or email address) if you are the lucky winner. Good luck, and go get busy making the world a better place.

* I am a one women campaign to try to bring 'ace' back in vogue, but may have stiff competition from Ben who is trying to bring 'huzzah' back in vogue.

ETA If you 'like' UtBwB on Facebook, there is no need to comment below, I will automatically add your name to the hat! If you choose to like via your page or business as opposed to your per sonal account then that is cool too, and counted as an entry!
